Bristol Sash Window Services - COSTS - 0117 900 0131

How long will it take?

A standard window service will take one person between two and three hours to complete.

How do you access the window?

The majority of services are conducted from the inside of the property. We need at least 2 square metres of space to work safely, but we can help move large items of furniture if necessary.

Do I need to do anything before you arrive?

We will normally put dust sheets out but you must make sure that all valuable equipment or furniture is either removed or safetly covered and protected from dust.

If you have valuable curtains or blinds you may wish to remove them

The sash window service: Cord replacement service

A sash window cord replacement service costs from £59.99 for the lower PAIR of sash cords (it really is not worth changing one), and £99.99 for both upper and lower pairs of cord (full window service see 'service' for details). Add £10 more per foot for windows over 1800mm (6') high or wide.

Nearly all sash windows require a few pounds of add weight if some of the glass has been changed during the history of the window and most windows will be fitted with replacement parting bead as the build up of paint inhibits free movement of the sashes. We use a specially produced 28mm wide bead giving extra draught reducing benefits while retaining the orignal specification.

The average inclusive price for a full service for a 1800mm window with parting bead and add weight included is around £125.00. The sash cords (the weakest part of the mechanism) last in the region of 15 -20 years so if the window is painted properly you should not need to service the windows more frequently than this.

How do we service a sash window?:

  • Dismantling of the window
  • Checking, cleaning and lubricating the pulleys
  • Weighing the sashes and checking the weights for counter-balance
  • Scraping away the paint on areas that obstruct the movement of the sashes
  • Re-cording the window with cotton sash cord and correct weights
  • Renew parting bead with head bead (where possible) to reduce draughts
  • Re-fit sashes in alignment with the beadings to remove the rattle
  • Paint all exposed timber with white primer
  • Wax and check for operation
