The Sash Window Service Ltd - Lead Conical 'Add Weights'
Add weights are added to existing windows, usually where the glass has been changed. Modern glass is thicker and therefore heavier than the original material, so you need to adjust the total weight to counter balance the sashes.
In most cases we recommend you use 2lb weights threaded through the sash cord. The upper sash wants to be overweighted between 1lb and 2lb to pull the windows closed shut where as weights for the lower sash needs to equal the sash weight.
There should be equal an amount of weight on each side of the sash but a difference of 1lb will normally be tolerated (i.e. if your existing weights are odd quantities).
Please note that the window has to be dismantled to weigh the sashes and to install add weights.
Ideally broken and cracked glass should also be replaced prior to re-weighting as the replacement glass will add to the weight of the sash.
Lead is a dense material thus you can get maximum weight increase with the minimum height. This is important where sashes are wider than they are tall or where heavy glass is being used (such as 6.4mm laminated glass or double glazed units).

We are the only online supplier of these specially produced conical weights.

Conical weights significantly reduce the tendency for add weights to snag or 'piggyback' in the weight boxes which can cause the sashes to stick and jam. At the sash window service we won't use anything else.
